Mounted in the spring of 2024, this retrospective brought together 58 paintings spanning more than seven decades of Bud Holman’s career — from early Kansas drawings through the final Nogales canvases he completed in his nineties. It was the most comprehensive survey of his work ever assembled.

Curator Samuel Saunders organized the works chronologically, tracing the evolution of Holman’s palette from the earth tones of the early Kansas and Stanford years through the coastal blues and oranges of the Sag Harbor series, to the fierce, layered intensity of the Sonoran desert paintings that defined his final decades.

The Museo de Arte de Nogales, situated on the US–Mexico border, was a fitting venue for a painter whose studio and late work were so shaped by the borderlands landscape.
